Maccabi Tel Aviv Chairman Slams 'Hostile Takeover' Bid

Shimon Mizrahi, the veteran chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball club, has strongly criticized attempts to gain control of the team, vowing to prevent what he termed a 'hostile takeover.' Mizrahi announced he had exercised his right of refusal regarding the Levin family's stake, effectively bringing them into the club.

Mizrahi released a lengthy statement detailing his objections, emphasizing the club's rich history and its status as a leading European team. He stressed that potential shareholders must possess a 'DNA' compatible with the club's spirit and tradition, demonstrated through long-term dedication and prioritizing the club's interests above personal gain.

"Maccabi is bigger than any one of us. Whoever seeks to lead it must remember that they come to serve the club, not that the club is meant to serve them," Mizrahi wrote. He expressed disappointment that those seeking control do not seem to understand that the club comes before any individual, including owners.

Mizrahi asserted that individuals wishing to be part of Maccabi must safeguard its stability rather than undermine it, allowing the team to focus on basketball instead of being dragged into constant struggles. He concluded by stating, "We will not allow a hostile takeover of the club by those who, in our eyes, do not have Maccabi's best interests at heart." He also highlighted the deep emotional connection many have to the club, stating, "This meaning of Maccabi in the lives of so many people is not for sale."
