Maccabi Tel Aviv Ownership Dispute Escalates to Legal Battle

The ongoing saga surrounding the ownership of Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball club has intensified, with American businessman Richard Daetz filing a restraining order against a move by chairman Shimon Mizrahi. This legal action follows a complex series of maneuvers involving the club's stakeholders.

Earlier, Daetz exercised his right of refusal regarding a proposed sale of shares by another owner, Recanati, to the Levin family. In response to Daetz's move, Mizrahi then invoked his own right of refusal. Daetz's latest legal filing seeks to freeze any stock transfer activities related to the club from this point forward, pushing the dispute into the courtroom.

Mizrahi issued a statement criticizing some of the owners, emphasizing that the club's interests must supersede individual ambitions. He stated, "Maccabi is bigger than any of us. Whoever seeks to lead it must remember that they come to serve the club, and not that the club is meant to serve them. Even great ambitions require the humility to understand this. Unfortunately, I have not noticed that those who seek to take over the team understand that the club comes before any person, including the owners."

He further added, "Whoever wishes to be part of Maccabi must preserve its stability and not undermine it, allow it to concentrate on basketball and not drag it into struggles again and again. We will not allow a hostile takeover of the club by those who, in our eyes, do not have Maccabi's best interests at heart."

Daetz responded with his own statement, expressing concern over the potential transfer of ownership to a new entity lacking a deep, prior connection to Maccabi. He argued, "I felt that the transfer of ownership to a new entity, without a deep and prior connection to Maccabi, is extremely dangerous. Maccabi is not just a business. Maccabi fans are not just numbers on an electronic sheet that can be moved to generate a return on investment for owners."
