James Tavernier Joins Maccabi Tel Aviv After Rejecting Numerous European and US Clubs

James Tavernier, the former Rangers captain, is set to become one of the most prominent signings in the Israeli Premier League in recent years, choosing Maccabi Tel Aviv over a host of European and American clubs. After concluding an 11-year tenure with Rangers, the 34-year-old fullback became a free agent, attracting interest from numerous teams across Europe and the United States.

For a significant period, Charlotte FC from Major League Soccer (MLS) appeared to be the frontrunner for his signature, with coach Dean Smith reportedly a "long-time admirer" pushing for the transfer. Reports confirmed Tavernier had discussions with Charlotte after leaving Rangers.

However, Charlotte was not his only option. Newcastle United, where Tavernier began his youth career, explored the possibility of bringing him back to bolster their squad. Several English clubs also made inquiries, including West Ham, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, and Aston Villa. West Ham's interest was reportedly linked to the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Turkish clubs, such as Istanbul Başakşehir, Kasımpaşa, and Ümraniyespor, also held talks regarding his transfer, with interest persisting through mid-August. In France, Nice and Paris FC monitored Tavernier, who expressed interest in playing in France, which would have been his first move outside of British football.

Despite interest from Saudi Arabian clubs and calls for a sentimental return to Rangers, the Scottish club's management ultimately decided against offering him a new contract. After a summer of speculation linking him to a wide array of clubs, Tavernier ultimately opted for Maccabi Tel Aviv.
