Weizmann Institute and Hebrew University Rank Among Top 100 Global Universities in Shanghai Ranking

The prestigious Shanghai Ranking for 2026 has placed two Israeli academic institutions among the top 100 universities worldwide. The Weizmann Institute of Science secured the 71st position, maintaining its ranking from the previous year, while the Hebrew University of Jerusalem ranked 89th, dropping one place from last year. The Technion, which was ranked 97th last year, fell out of the top 100 this year.

Other Israeli universities ranked lower include Ben-Gurion University in the 401-500 range, Bar-Ilan University in the 501-600 range, and the University of Haifa in the 601-700 bracket. The Shanghai Ranking evaluates around 2,500 higher education institutions globally, using objective indicators such as the volume and quality of scientific publications in leading journals and the number of faculty and alumni who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.

Top global universities in the ranking include Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, the University of Cambridge, and the University of California, Berkeley. Hebrew University President Professor Tamir Shafir praised the ranking, stating that the 89th place is a clear testament to the university's academic excellence and international standing. He emphasized ongoing investments in outstanding researchers, bold research, and global partnerships to advance discoveries and expand the impact of Israeli science worldwide.
