Two Israeli Universities Rank Among Top 100 Globally in Shanghai Ranking
The 2026 Shanghai Ranking, released on Saturday, places two Israeli universities among the world’s top 100 institutions. The Weizmann Institute of Science ranks 71st, while the Hebrew University of Jerusalem holds the 89th spot. This marks a decline from last year, when Israel had three universities in the top 100, including the Technion, which ranked 97th but has now dropped out of the list.
The top three positions remain occupied by major American universities: Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. The Shanghai Ranking evaluates approximately 2,500 higher education institutions worldwide, assessing factors such as the volume and quality of scientific publications in leading journals, and the number of faculty and alumni who have received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals.
The ranking is considered one of the most reliable and prestigious academic assessments globally. Separately, the Israeli Council for Higher Education has ruled that universities cannot engage in political campaigns, amid concerns over external influences such as Qatar’s efforts to sway education in the United States against Israel.
