Weizmann Institute and Hebrew University Rank Among Top 100 in 2026 Shanghai Academic Ranking

The prestigious 2026 Shanghai Academic Ranking has once again placed Israeli institutions among the world's academic elite. The Weizmann Institute of Science secured the 71st position, maintaining its rank from the previous year, while the Hebrew University of Jerusalem ranked 89th, slipping one place from last year. Both institutions are listed among the top 100 global universities, highlighting Israel's continued presence in high-level academic research.

The Shanghai Ranking evaluates over 2,500 higher education institutions worldwide annually, using criteria such as the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal laureates among faculty and alumni, citation impact, and publications in leading scientific journals. Notably, the Technion, which had been ranked in the top 100 for the past two years, fell out of this elite group in the 2026 ranking.

At the top of the global ranking, Harvard University remains first, followed by Stanford University in second place and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in third. The top five is rounded out by the University of Cambridge in fourth and the University of California, Berkeley in fifth.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion congratulated the Hebrew University on its achievement, stating, "Congratulations to the Hebrew University for another accomplishment and for maintaining its place among the top 100 universities worldwide. This important ranking strengthens its status as one of the leading research institutions globally and reflects its excellence, innovation, and influence in the international academic arena."
