Only Two Israeli Universities Rank in Top 100 Worldwide for First Time Since 2020

For the first time since 2020, only two Israeli universities are ranked among the top 100 in the prestigious Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. The Technion, which has steadily declined in recent years, dropped out of the top 100, now placed between 100 and 150. The Weizmann Institute maintained its position at 71, and the Hebrew University held steady at 89. The Shanghai ranking, published annually since 2003, evaluates global academic institutions based on research quality, including Nobel and Fields laureates, publications in leading journals like Nature and Science, and other research metrics. It covers over 2,500 universities and lists the top 1,000.

In recent years, the Weizmann Institute slipped slightly from 68 in 2023 to 71 in 2026, while the Hebrew University fluctuated between 81 and 89 over the same period. The Technion's decline is more pronounced, falling from 79 in 2023 to outside the top 100 in 2026. Other Israeli universities ranked include Tel Aviv University (150-200), Ben-Gurion University (401-500), Bar-Ilan University (501-600), and University of Haifa (601-700).

Historically, having three Israeli universities in the top 100 was a significant achievement, attributed to Israel's relatively high number of Nobel and Fields laureates and strategic efforts to publish in prestigious journals. However, the recent drop reflects the rapid advancement of universities in East Asia and the Arabian Peninsula, with three of the four new entrants to the top 100 this year being Chinese institutions. Israeli universities face challenges competing with massive investments from other countries, especially as Israel's funding for academia remains limited.

Despite the Technion's international collaborations, including campuses in Guangdong, China, and Manhattan, its ranking continues to fall. Globally, Harvard remains first, followed by Stanford and MIT, with Cambridge and UC Berkeley completing the top five. The U.S. dominates the top 10 with eight universities, the UK has two, and China now has 16 universities in the top 100, up from 13 last year.
