Unseasonal August Rainstorm Brings Flood Risks to Eastern Israel

An unusual weather event is unfolding in Israel as August experiences unexpected rain and thunderstorms, primarily in the eastern regions. The Meteorological Service warns of flash floods in the Judean Desert, Dead Sea area, northern Arava, and northeastern Negev. Despite the heavy heat, localized showers and storms are expected from Sunday afternoon onward. On Monday, temperatures will slightly drop with partial cloudiness and some easing of the heat, while rain may still occur mainly in the east. Tuesday will see partly cloudy to clear skies with stable temperatures, and Wednesday will bring clearer weather with a slight temperature rise in the hills and inland areas.

The Meteorological Service issued a red heat alert valid from 11:00 to 22:00 on Sunday for the Beit She'an Valley, Kinneret Basin, Jordan Valley, northern and southern Judean Desert, Dead Sea, and northern Arava. Other parts of the country will experience partly cloudy to clear skies with no significant temperature changes.

This rare August rainfall follows heavy showers on Saturday that caused flooding and flash floods in eastern Israel. Ma'ale Adumim recorded 26 millimeters of rain, with 21 millimeters falling within one hour. Eastern and southern neighborhoods of Jerusalem faced flooding requiring resident and vehicle rescues, and Gush Etzion received about 15 millimeters in a short time. Localized flash floods occurred in the Judean Desert, and water flowed in the upper Kidron stream due to the rain in eastern Jerusalem.

Meteorologist Danny Roff explained that while light summer rain is not uncommon, this event is exceptional due to atmospheric instability causing rapid cloud development and heavy downpours typical of autumn months. Rainfall exceeding 25 millimeters in August is rare in Israel, with only a few recorded instances since measurements began, including in the Golan Heights in 2012 and other locations decades ago. The Judean Desert rainfall may represent a historic high for August in that area, though the event was very localized. Most of Jerusalem and the country experienced only minor or no unusual rain.

Police in the Judea and Samaria district are preparing for road closures due to the rain and flood risks, deploying officers on key roads in vulnerable areas. The highest flood risk in the desert streams and Dead Sea region is expected between 12:00 and 18:00 Sunday. Authorities advise the public to plan travel carefully, avoid hiking in flood-prone wadis, and stay updated on road conditions via police hotlines and announcements.
