Unseasonal August Weather Brings Local Rain, Thunderstorms, and Flood Risks in Eastern Israel

An unusual weather event for mid-August has brought local rainfall, thunderstorms, and flood warnings to eastern Israel, including the Dead Sea Rift and the Judean Desert. On August 15, rain fell in Jerusalem, central Israel, and mainly in the east, with 15.2 mm recorded in Maale Adumim, marking a local rainfall record for the Jerusalem area. Radar images also showed rain clouds over the Golan Heights and the Judean Mountains. The showers, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, raised concerns about flash floods in the desert streams of the Judean Desert and the Dead Sea region. These conditions occurred under partly cloudy skies and temperatures that remained typical for the season.

A yellow warning was issued for high and dangerous waves along the Mediterranean coast, effective from 10:00 to 22:00 on the same day, with wave heights between 80 and 120 cm and rising. The atmospheric instability is expected to continue on Sunday, August 16, with partly cloudy to clear skies and no significant temperature changes, but local rain may return in the afternoon, especially in eastern areas.

On Monday, August 17, a shift is forecasted with a slight drop in temperatures, bringing relief from the heatwave. Temperatures will be somewhat below seasonal averages in the mountains and inland, easing the heat burden. Early morning light drizzles are also possible along the coastal strip. Overnight skies will remain partly cloudy.

This weather pattern is notable for its rarity in mid-August, a month typically characterized by stable, hot, and dry conditions in Israel.
