Unexpected August Weather Brings Local Rain, Thunderstorms, and Flood Risks in Eastern Israel

An unusual weather event for mid-August has brought local rain showers, thunderstorms, and flood warnings to eastern Israel, including the Dead Sea Rift and Judean Desert. On August 15, rain fell in Jerusalem, central Israel, and mainly the eastern regions, with 15.2 mm recorded in Maale Adumim, marking a rainfall peak for the area. Radar also detected rain clouds over the Golan Heights and Judean Mountains. These showers, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, have raised concerns about flash floods in the desert streams and Dead Sea area. The skies were partly cloudy with temperatures remaining typical for the season.

A yellow warning was issued for high and dangerous waves along the Mediterranean coast, effective from 10:00 to 22:00 on the same day, with wave heights between 80 and 120 cm and rising. The atmospheric instability is expected to continue on Sunday, with partly cloudy to clear skies and a chance of local rain mainly in the east during the afternoon.

By Monday, a shift is forecasted with a slight drop in temperatures, falling below seasonal averages in the mountains and inland areas. This will ease the heat burden significantly, and light drizzle may occur along the coastal strip in the morning hours.
