Rare August Rainstorm Hits Eastern Israel Causing Floods and Rescues, More Rain Expected Tomorrow

An unusual heavy rainfall event struck eastern Israel and the Judean Mountains on August 15, with over 25 millimeters recorded in Maale Adumim, leading to flash floods and multiple rescues in East Jerusalem. Specifically, Maale Adumim received 26 millimeters of rain, 21 of which fell within less than an hour, causing rapid water flow in Nahal Og and prompting emergency responses. Such significant rainfall in August is extremely rare in the region, having occurred only three times previously: once in the 1920s, again about 50 years later, and most recently in August 2012 in the Golan Heights.

While most of Israel experienced hot, clear weather, this localized storm affected the Golan Heights, Judean Mountains, and the Judean Desert. Meteorologists forecast continued significant rain for the following day, with a high risk of flash floods in the Judean Desert streams and the northern and southern Dead Sea areas, especially between noon and early evening.

In response, the Israel Police have deployed officers along main roads and vulnerable areas to assist travelers, maintain public safety, and provide rapid emergency support. Authorities urge the public to plan travel carefully, avoid high-risk zones such as riverbeds and hiking trails, and heed warnings to prevent life-threatening situations caused by flash floods.
