IDF and Shin Bet Kill Hamas Military Security Chief Linked to 2023 Kidnapping and Killing of Israeli Soldiers
On Wednesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet eliminated Muhammad Naeem Jandiya, the military security chief of Hamas's Shuja'iyya battalion, in northern Gaza. Jandiya was involved in the kidnapping of Captain Daniel Peretz and held Israeli soldiers Yotam Haim, Samer Talalka, and Alon Shmoriz captive in an underground tunnel before they were accidentally killed by IDF fire.
Jandiya also led the Hamas assault team that attacked Kibbutz Nahal Oz during the October 7, 2023 massacre. The IDF stated that he recently attempted to orchestrate terror attacks against Israeli forces operating in Gaza. He was a prominent masked participant in Hamas ceremonies related to hostage release negotiations.
Daniel Peretz's father, Rabbi Doron Peretz, expressed gratitude to the security forces, emphasizing the significance of holding accountable those responsible for kidnapping and killing innocent people amid Israel's ongoing pain. The brothers of Alon Shmoriz said that while no operation can erase their loss, removing Jandiya makes the world slightly better and they choose to honor Alon's memory and values.
Peretz, who lived in the West Bank settlement of Yad Binyamin, was killed during the October 7 battles while commanding a tank at Nahal Oz. His body was taken to Gaza and returned to Israel in a hostage exchange last October.
The three hostages, Haim, Shmoriz, and Talalka, were mistakenly shot dead by IDF forces on December 15 in Shuja'iyya, Gaza, during a chaotic firefight. An IDF investigation found that despite the hostages being unarmed and one carrying a white flag, a sniper fired on them, resulting in their deaths. The probe revealed intelligence failures, poor communication between units, and inadequate operational control contributed to the tragedy. It concluded that better coordination and clearer instructions might have prevented the deaths.
