El Al Flight Returns to Israel After Engine Malfunction, Passengers Endure 26-Hour Ordeal

An El Al flight from Tel Aviv to Miami experienced a significant delay and a mid-air diversion due to a technical malfunction, resulting in a total travel time of approximately 26 hours in the air for passengers. The flight, LY017, was initially scheduled to depart from Ben Gurion Airport on Monday night but faced multiple delays, eventually taking off at 4:30 AM on Tuesday.

About six hours into the flight, after crossing French airspace, the pilots informed passengers of an engine malfunction and the necessity to return to Israel. Passengers were told that the plane could land in Europe if needed, but the decision was made to return to Tel Aviv.

Upon returning to Israel, some passengers opted to wait for a subsequent flight, while others were hesitant to re-board after the stressful experience. The alternative flight departed at 4:00 PM, with passengers finally arriving in Miami approximately 32 hours after their original departure time.

One passenger, Tomi Arawa, described the experience as a "nightmare that never ended." He noted that while the airline staff were accommodating throughout the ordeal, the initial departure was allowed despite a known engine issue. El Al has offered passengers a choice between an alternative flight or a refund, and has provided compensation for the inconvenience. Economy class passengers received $1500, premium class $2000, and business class $2500, in addition to legally mandated compensation. The airline apologized for the disruption, emphasizing that passenger safety is its top priority.
