El Al Flight to Miami Returns to Ben Gurion After 4.5 Hours Due to Technical Fault

An El Al flight from Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport to Miami, LY017, was forced to turn back after approximately four and a half hours of flying due to an "unexpected technical malfunction." The Boeing 787 had already experienced a significant delay, departing nearly four hours later than its scheduled 00:15 time. After being airborne for about four and a half hours, the crew decided not to continue the transatlantic journey or divert to another airport, opting instead to return to Ben Gurion. According to Calcalist, a factor in this decision was El Al's ability to service the aircraft at its own hangar in Tel Aviv. Returning to base also allowed the airline to arrange for passenger care, most of whom were Israeli citizens. El Al confirmed the technical issue, stating the return was prioritized for the safety of passengers and crew. Passengers were offered the choice of an alternative flight to Miami or a full refund. The airline apologized for the inconvenience, noting that passengers effectively spent a full day on the plane only to return to their starting point. This incident follows a similar event the previous day, where an Israir charter flight also returned to Ben Gurion due to a technical issue, though that flight had only been airborne for about 40 minutes.
