El Al Flight to Miami Returns to Israel After Technical Issue

An El Al flight bound for Miami on September 29th was forced to turn back to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv after flying for approximately 4.5 hours due to an unforeseen technical malfunction discovered mid-flight. The flight, LY017, had already been delayed significantly, departing at 4:12 AM instead of its scheduled 00:15 AM. The aircraft had crossed over Europe and was over the Atlantic Ocean when the crew decided to abort the journey and return to Israel. El Al stated the issue was unexpected and has offered passengers a choice between rebooking on another flight to Miami or receiving a full refund. The airline apologized for the inconvenience, emphasizing that passenger and crew safety is their top priority.

This incident occurs during a period of significant delays at Ben Gurion Airport. According to Ynet, between September 21st and 27th, only 46.3% of 3,199 checked flights departed or arrived on time, with an average delay of 92 minutes for those that were late. Notably, El Al and Wizz Air had better punctuality records during this week, with El Al operating 61.3% of its 760 flights on schedule and Wizz Air achieving 60.9% on-time performance for its 110 flights, averaging a 39-minute delay for late flights.
