Passengers on an El Al flight to Miami experienced a return journey to Tel Aviv after spending four and a half hours in the air due to an unexpected technical issue. Flight LY017, en route from Tel Aviv to Miami, turned back to Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) after the problem was detected mid-flight.
The flight was originally scheduled to depart at 00:15 but was delayed, taking off at 04:12. Approximately four and a half hours into the journey, the decision was made to abort the transatlantic trip and return to Israel.
This incident occurs amidst a particularly busy week at Ben Gurion Airport. Data from September 21-27 revealed that only 46.3% of flights operated on time, with an average delay of 92 minutes for those that were late. El Al flights during the same period had a better on-time performance, with 61.3% departing or arriving as scheduled, and an average delay of 49 minutes for delayed flights.
El Al stated, "El Al flight LY017 from Tel Aviv to Miami turned back to Tel Aviv several hours after takeoff due to an unexpected technical malfunction. Upon arrival in Israel, passengers will be offered an alternative flight to Miami or a refund, according to their choice. We apologize to the passengers for the inconvenience and emphasize that El Al prioritizes the safety and security of passengers and crew."
