El Al Flight to Miami Diverted Due to Technical Issue, Passengers to Receive Compensation
An El Al flight from Tel Aviv to Miami, LY017, was forced to turn back over the Atlantic Ocean six hours into its journey on Tuesday evening due to an "unexpected technical malfunction." The aircraft, which departed from Ben Gurion Airport, had to return to Israel, resulting in passengers spending over ten hours in the air and on board, ultimately landing back at their departure point.
Upon returning to Tel Aviv, passengers were offered two options: rebook on an alternative flight to Miami departing the same day or receive a full refund for their tickets. In addition to the refund or rebooking, El Al announced it would provide compensation beyond standard conditions. Passengers could choose between a cash payment or a future travel voucher.
The airline detailed a compensation scheme based on service class. Economy class passengers are to receive $1,500, premium class passengers $2,000, and business class passengers $2,500.
