British Films Critical of Israel Nominated for International Emmy Awards

Two British documentaries critical of Israeli policies and military conduct have been nominated for the 2026 International Emmy Awards. The nominations highlight the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the West Bank's presence on the international stage.

One nominated film is Louis Theroux's documentary "Louis Theroux: The Settlers," which is up for Best Documentary. Theroux revisits the Israeli settlement movement in the West Bank, a topic he explored 15 years prior, and this time focuses on some activists' aspirations to re-establish settlements in the Gaza Strip. The film features interviews with prominent right-wing activist Daniela Weiss, settlers in the West Bank, Palestinians, and Israelis who oppose settlement expansion. A notable scene includes Theroux confronting Weiss, describing her views as "sociopathic." While praised by some in the British press, the film also faced criticism for allegedly focusing on extreme voices and not representing a broader spectrum of Israeli society.

The second nominated film is ITV's "Exposure: Breaking Ranks: Inside Israel's War," nominated in the Current Affairs category. This investigative report presents testimonies from current and former Israeli soldiers who served in Gaza. The interviewees allege serious misconduct by forces during the war, including indiscriminate bombing, firing on civilians, and the use of Palestinians as human shields. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have previously stated they operate in accordance with international law and investigate alleged deviations from orders.

Additionally, Al Jazeera's Arabic documentary "Missing in Gaza," which chronicles Palestinian families searching for relatives lost during the war, particularly among the rubble in the Strip, is nominated in the News category.
