British Film on IDF Gaza Operations Nominated for International Emmy Amid Controversy

A British documentary film examining the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) operations in Gaza has been nominated for an International Emmy Award in the Current Affairs category. Titled "Breaking Ranks: Inside Israel’s War," the film, which aired on the UK's ITV network in November 2025, features testimonies from soldiers who served in the Gaza Strip. These soldiers, including reservists and veterans, reportedly raise allegations of harm to civilians and the alleged use of Palestinians as human shields, while describing the forces' operational methods.

The nomination comes amidst ongoing controversy surrounding another film, "NezA," by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Shor. "NezA," which also draws on military testimonies and presents claims about IDF actions in Gaza, recently received a special jury prize at the Venice Film Festival. Following its recognition, Israel's Minister of Culture, Miki Zohar, called for an examination of the filmmakers' citizenship and the sources used in their film. The IDF has previously rejected the claims presented in "NezA."

It is important to note that "Breaking Ranks" and "NezA" are distinct productions by different creators. The International Emmy nominations also include Louis Theroux's "The Settlers," which focuses on Israeli settlements and is nominated for Best Documentary, and Al Jazeera's report "Missing in Gaza," nominated in the News category.

"Breaking Ranks" is listed as a UK nominee. The winners are scheduled to be announced in New York on November 23. Israeli productions have previously won International Emmys, with the drama series "Tehran" securing an award in 2021.
