IDF Failed to Defend Gaza Border Outpost in October 7 Attack, Inquiry Finds

An operational inquiry into the battle for the Foga outpost on October 7 has concluded that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) failed in its mission to defend the area, allowing Hamas terrorists to infiltrate and capture the position. The investigation, led by Colonel Uri Ron, found systemic failures in preparedness, equipment shortages, and inadequate infrastructure for combat.

The intense fighting at the outpost, also known as "Magen Bari," resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers and injuries to 22 others. The outpost was attacked by an estimated 60 to 80 terrorists. The inquiry revealed that the enemy neutralized key regional assets, including intelligence gathering and firepower, which facilitated the breach of the outpost and the nearby Kibbutz Bari.

The report details the sequence of the attack, beginning with a "dawn alert" status at 5:30 AM, followed by massive Hamas rocket fire at 6:29 AM. Terrorists breached the defenses through multiple entry points, with the first nine infiltrating the outpost via the armored personnel carrier gate at 6:55 AM. Subsequent groups attacked various positions within the compound. The initial volley of fire killed three soldiers from the mortar squad.

Despite the overwhelming assault, the report highlights acts of bravery by soldiers of the Golani Brigade's 13th Battalion and the Nitzan Shapira armored crew. The inquiry noted that the battalion's company combat team was unprepared in terms of equipment and defensive positions. The report also mentioned that air force strikes were not sufficiently effective due to coordination gaps with ground forces, and the loss of senior commanders impacted decision-making and battle management.

The investigation concluded that the soldiers and commanders were not adequately prepared for their mission, stating, "It was expected that IDF forces would create a different reality." The battle for the Foga outpost was part of a larger, surprise attack by hundreds of terrorists, and the pre-attack assessment of the situation was flawed, as forces were primarily dealing with border disturbances, not a large-scale infiltration scenario.
