IDF Investigation Finds Failures in Gaza Border Base Defense on Oct. 7

A ten-month Israeli military investigation concluded that the Gaza Division's Gaza Border Defense Array, specifically the Vaga outpost and Kibbutz Be'eri, was inadequately prepared for the Hamas-led attack on October 7. The probe, which utilized communication logs, surveillance footage, security cameras, police reports, and field reenactments, revealed that 18 soldiers and commanders were killed, 22 were wounded, and two were captured and taken to Gaza.

The investigation found that prior to the attack, forces were primarily focused on disturbances along the border fence, which skewed threat assessments and training. Crucially, training did not sufficiently incorporate a scenario involving a simultaneous, large-scale surprise assault on both the Vaga outpost and Kibbutz Be'eri.

The attack commenced at 6:29 AM with heavy rocket fire and breaches of the border fence at numerous points. Forces within the outpost faced a well-organized assault with a significant numerical advantage from the attackers. The investigation highlighted shortages in combat equipment and weaponry, as well as deficiencies in defensive positions and infrastructure readiness. Hamas operatives managed to disable intelligence-gathering assets and parts of the defense system within the initial hours.

Air Force support faced difficulties due to coordination gaps and an unclear understanding of the battlefield situation. After Hamas fighters entered the outpost, soldiers fought for hours. Some soldiers fortified themselves in a protected dining room, resisting attempts to breach it until attackers used incendiary materials and smoke to force them out. Five soldiers who attempted a direct engagement after emerging were killed.

Rescue forces arrived later in the afternoon, clearing the area and evacuating the wounded after the attackers had withdrawn. The investigation's conclusion stated that forces were not sufficiently prepared for the mission, with readiness, equipment, and training levels not matching the attack's scenario. However, the probe also commended the performance of soldiers and commanders who continued fighting, some while wounded and lacking equipment, describing their actions as demonstrating "heroism and camaraderie."
