IDF Report Details Systemic Failures in October 7th Battle at Poga Outpost

An IDF investigation into the battle at the Poga outpost on October 7th revealed systemic failures in preparedness and responsibility, leading to the deaths of 18 soldiers, injuries to 22, and the abduction of two others. The report, presented to bereaved families, found the military did not prevent the enemy from taking control of areas under its jurisdiction, nor did it stop terrorists from infiltrating Kibbutz Be'eri and capturing the outpost.

The 10-month investigation, led by Colonel A., analyzed extensive data including communications, surveillance footage, police investigations, and social media. It detailed the intense fighting that began at 6:29 AM with a Hamas rocket barrage. Despite initial defensive actions by Golani Brigade's 13th Battalion soldiers, they faced a significant numerical disadvantage. The report highlights critical moments, such as the loss of a tank to a drone attack and the infiltration of nine terrorists into the outpost by 6:55 AM, leading to fierce close-quarters combat.

Failures identified include inadequate training for a surprise attack scenario, a flawed understanding of the threat, and insufficient equipment and operational readiness at the Poga outpost, despite its designation as a combat position. The neutralization of key defensive assets by the enemy further enabled their penetration into the outpost and Kibbutz Be'eri.

Air force attacks were largely ineffective due to coordination gaps with ground forces. The report also noted the impact of leadership casualties on decision-making during the battle. The investigation concluded that while preventing the initial infiltration was beyond the forces' capability given the enemy's numbers, they should have achieved a decisive victory against the terrorists who breached the Sufa and Poga outposts. The report acknowledged acts of heroism amidst the failures, stating, "In this reality, and perhaps precisely because of it, acts of heroism and camaraderie by fighters and commanders also stood out."
