IDF Acknowledges Failures in October 7 West Negev Defense but Rejects Criticism from Former Officer
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officially admitted it failed in its mission to protect the western Negev and Israeli civilians during the events of October 7. The military has completed its investigative phase regarding the incident and is now focused on implementing lessons learned to fulfill its responsibility to defend the country and its citizens against all threats.
The IDF praised the bravery of many security forces and civilians, including retired Brigadier General Oren Solomon, whose actions saved numerous lives. However, the IDF strongly rejected Solomon's criticisms. Solomon, who served as the combat director of the Gaza Division and was appointed by the previous division commander to lead the October 7 investigative team within the Gaza Division, did not serve as head of the overall military investigation or hold any general staff role in the inquiry process, and he is no longer active in the IDF.
The IDF stated that Solomon's remarks harm the military and its commanders and cast doubt on the integrity of hundreds of personnel involved in the October 7 investigations. A decision to open an investigation into Solomon was made by the relevant professional authorities. After reviewing all findings, the military prosecution decided to close the case.
This statement clarifies the IDF's position on internal criticism following the October 7 events and underscores its commitment to accountability and reform.
