IDF Releases Damning Report on Gaza Border Outpost Battle

Three years after the October 7th Hamas attacks, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has released a comprehensive investigation into the battle for the Foga outpost, revealing severe systemic failures and "complete abandonment" that led to the "tragic and unnecessary deaths" of many soldiers. The report, completed a year ago but repeatedly delayed by senior military officials, details a "colossal systemic failure" and soldiers sent into battle without adequate protective equipment, facing thousands of terrorists.

The investigation found that soldiers at the Foga outpost were trained only for limited border skirmishes, not for a large-scale surprise attack. Their equipment, operational readiness, and the outpost's infrastructure were insufficient. The IDF "utterly failed" to defend the area, prevent the outpost's fall, or stop terrorists from advancing into nearby communities and Kibbutz Be'eri.

The battle for Foga and the adjacent Sahaf outpost resulted in 18 Israeli fatalities, including 14 from the Golani Brigade's 13th Battalion, three from the Armored Corps' 77th Battalion, and a sector tracker. Twenty-two soldiers were wounded, and the bodies of two, including tracker Mohammed Al-Atresh and tank commander Shai Levinson, were taken to Gaza. The outpost was attacked by 60 to 80 terrorists in three waves, against approximately 30 Israeli soldiers.

The report highlights critical moments, including communication failures, the initial breach by about ten terrorists, and ineffective air force intervention due to poor situational awareness. Despite the military investigation being barred from assigning direct personal responsibility, its conclusions are stark: the outpost collapsed, soldiers were unprepared, and the system failed in its most crucial test of protecting human lives. The report also honors the exceptional bravery of commanders and soldiers who defended their comrades.

Despite attempts by the IDF to explain the report's delay due to the ongoing conflict and the involvement of the Golani Brigade, the report notes that investigations into other October 7th events involving Golani forces were published much earlier. The IDF stated the delay was due to "the continued fighting of the Golani Brigade" and the difficulty in presenting the material to those involved.
