IDF Investigation Reveals Failures and Heroism in West Bank Gilad Farm Terror Attack

An IDF operational investigation into the July 24, 2026 terror attack near the West Bank village of Tal in the Samaria region uncovered serious command and operational failures alongside acts of exceptional bravery. The attack began when a group of hikers ventured into the area without prior coordination with security forces, leading to a confrontation with Palestinian assailants who threw stones, seized a local security coordinator's weapon, and opened fire.

The initial military response was undermanned and delayed, with forces spread thin over a wide area. Lieutenant Colonel Yuval Ezra and reserve Captain Benyahu Malt, both killed in the attack, led efforts to protect civilians and neutralize the terrorists. Ezra killed one attacker before falling, while Malt’s cause of death remains unclear, possibly from enemy fire or friendly fire during the chaotic engagement. Additional terrorists were killed by a platoon commander and two off-duty IDF soldiers who happened to be among the hikers.

The investigation highlighted critical shortcomings, including inadequate force size relative to the threat, poor situational awareness, delayed reinforcements, and a significant delay in medical evacuation. Malt was left wounded on the field for an extended period, treated only by a civilian medic without military support, a failure the IDF Chief of Staff described as a "moral and professional breach" contrary to IDF values prioritizing civilian and wounded soldier safety.

Following the attack, security forces raided a hospital in Nablus to arrest two additional wounded terrorists. The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, endorsed the investigation’s findings and ordered immediate implementation of lessons learned. Malt was posthumously promoted to captain during his officer training process. Zamir emphasized the IDF’s commitment to protecting Israeli civilians and praised the fallen soldiers’ courage in preventing greater casualties.

The incident underscores ongoing challenges in securing civilian activities in volatile areas and the need for improved coordination and rapid response capabilities within the IDF’s Samaria Brigade.
