IDF Investigation Reveals Failures and Heroism in West Bank Terror Attack

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released the findings of its investigation into a terror attack that occurred about two weeks ago near the village of Tal in the Samaria Brigade area. The attack resulted in the deaths of Lieutenant Colonel Yuval Ezra, commander of Battery 411, and Captain (res.) Beniya Malat, a Home Front Defense fighter. Several civilians, including the security coordinator of the settlement Havat Gilad, were also injured during the incident involving stone-throwing assailants.

The investigation, presented to Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir by Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot and Judea and Samaria Division Commander Brigadier General Kobi Heller, highlighted operational shortcomings. It was found that the group of hikers went out without coordination or approval from security authorities, despite prior intelligence about the hike. The initial IDF force was too small relative to the scope of the attack, and reinforcements and medical teams were not deployed swiftly enough.

During the attack, the security coordinator’s weapon was seized by attackers, prompting Malat, Ezra, and the coordinator to courageously engage the terrorists to protect civilians. Ezra killed one attacker but was killed in the fight. All terrorists involved were neutralized or arrested. The investigation could not conclusively determine whether Malat was killed by terrorist fire or friendly fire during the combat.

A critical failure was identified in the evacuation process, where Malat remained wounded on the ground for an extended period, treated only by a civilian medic without military protection, a lapse deemed inconsistent with IDF values prioritizing civilian safety. Following the attack, security forces raided a hospital in Nablus and arrested two wounded terrorists.

In recognition of his bravery and ongoing officer training, Chief of Staff Zamir approved Malat’s posthumous promotion to captain (res.). Major General Blot praised the fallen soldiers’ heroism, stating their decisive actions prevented greater civilian casualties. Zamir emphasized the IDF’s commitment to protecting Israeli civilians and improving operational readiness based on lessons learned from this and similar attacks, which are increasing in frequency in open areas near villages.
