IDF Investigation Finds Benyahu Malat Was Unescorted When Wounded; Cause of Death Unclear

An IDF investigation into the attack near Givat Gilad in the West Bank concluded that Lieutenant Colonel (res.) Benyahu Malat was left wounded without military escort, and it remains unclear whether he was killed by terrorist gunfire or stray fire during the neutralization of attackers. The initial force was deployed after observers reported stones being thrown at a group of Israeli hikers. Additional soldiers, including Lt. Col. Yuval Ezra and security coordinators, quickly arrived to separate the Palestinians from the hikers and push the attackers back into the village.

During the confrontation, the attackers were killed or wounded, and all involved terrorists were arrested. The operation was praised for preventing greater civilian harm. However, the investigation also identified operational and command failures, including the initial force arriving outnumbered, poor soldier performance, and medical evacuation issues. The Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, adopted the findings and ordered immediate implementation of lessons learned.

Central Command Commander Maj. Gen. Avi Blot highlighted the bravery of Malat and Ezra, who acted courageously to protect civilians. He warned of increasing attacks in open areas near villages and stressed the need for better preparation and readiness. Zamir also commended the swift arrest of a terrorist at a hospital and praised the intelligence and observation units, directing further strengthening of intelligence capabilities to detect threats and rapidly deploy forces.

The investigation underscored the complexity of security challenges in the West Bank and the necessity for tactical and systemic improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future.
