IDF Chief Reviews Findings of Deadly Attack Investigation in West Bank's Kfar Tal

Two Israeli soldiers, Lieutenant Colonel Yuval Ezra and Reserve Captain Benyahu Malat, were killed in a terrorist attack near the West Bank village of Kfar Tal about two weeks ago. The attack also injured the security coordinator of the nearby settlement of Havat Gilad and several civilians hit by stone-throwing. The investigation, presented to IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir by Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot and Judea and Samaria Division Commander Brigadier General Kobi Heller, revealed several operational failures.

The unauthorized hike in the area was not coordinated with security forces as required. Intelligence was received hours before the event, and attempts were made to gather details about the hike. Initial troops were deployed after reports of stones being thrown at the hikers. Additional forces, including the fallen Lt. Col. Ezra and Reserve Captain Malat, rushed to the scene to separate Palestinians from Israeli hikers and push attackers back into the village. During the confrontation, the attackers were neutralized, but Lt. Col. Ezra was killed in combat. It remains unclear whether Malat was killed by terrorist fire or friendly fire during the engagement.

The investigation found that the military force on site was insufficient relative to the scale of the attack and number of civilians present. Other troops in the area failed to fully assess the situation, deploy reinforcements, or promptly activate medical evacuation. A serious lapse occurred when Malat, wounded, was left on the ground for several minutes receiving care only from a civilian medic without military protection, violating IDF values prioritizing civilian safety.

Following the attack, security forces arrested two wounded terrorists in a daylight raid at a hospital in Nablus. The Chief of Staff approved posthumous promotion of Malat to captain, acknowledging his ongoing officer training. Central Command emphasized the rising frequency of such attacks in open areas near villages, calling for improved preparedness and tactical readiness.

The Chief of Staff stressed the importance of learning from this significant incident, which involved the kidnapping of a security coordinator's weapon and the loss of two brave soldiers who prevented greater harm to civilians. He affirmed the IDF's commitment to protecting Israeli citizens at all times and pledged to continue thorough investigations to enhance operational capabilities.
