IDF Soldiers Complain About Poor Conditions at Southern Gaza Outpost Amid Rodent Infestation and Infrastructure Issues
Soldiers serving at the Southern Gaza Research and Development outpost in the southern brigade of the Gaza Division have voiced strong criticism regarding the poor living conditions at the base. In a conversation with Walla on Wednesday, they complained about commanders refusing to improve the state of the sleeping quarters, showers, toilets, and kitchenette. The soldiers reported persistent problems with rats and mice climbing on them at night, ongoing plumbing issues, overcrowding in shower and toilet lines, and logistical challenges related to food and water supply during patrols in extreme heat.
An on-site inspection revealed that while parts of the outpost have been renovated and kept clean, other sections remain neglected, with makeshift perimeter fences made of wood and cardboard, accumulated garbage, and an old barbecue with leftover food near the fence that could be easily cut through. A military reservist source called for the army to establish a permanent standard for all outposts and conduct thorough inspections, emphasizing that service conditions should be equal for all soldiers. The source also noted that promises to move soldiers to new buildings were later withdrawn by commanders for unclear reasons.
The outpost was the site of a significant attack on October 7, when approximately 35 militants infiltrated it, causing the defense system to collapse. Despite this, the attackers failed to carry out kidnappings or a killing spree. The location of the camp was deemed incorrect, and air force support arrived only in the afternoon. Four soldiers were killed during the attack. A General Staff investigation highlighted the soldiers' and commanders' determined bravery and front-line leadership throughout the battle, praising their relentless fighting spirit even until the death and injury of the platoon commander.
The IDF officially rejected the soldiers' complaints outright. The situation at the outpost underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining adequate living and operational conditions for troops stationed in sensitive border areas.
