IDF Failed to Defend Gaza Border Outpost in October 7th Battle, Inquiry Finds

An operational inquiry into the battle for the Foga outpost on October 7th has concluded that the Israeli military failed in its mission to defend the area, allowing Hamas terrorists to infiltrate and capture the position. The investigation, led by Colonel Uri Ron, found systemic failures in preparedness, equipment shortages, and inadequate infrastructure, alongside acts of heroism by soldiers.

The intense fighting at the outpost resulted in the deaths of 18 soldiers and wounded 22 others, as between 60 and 80 terrorists breached the defenses. The Foga outpost, also known as 'Magen Bari', was manned by soldiers from the Golani Brigade's 13th Battalion. The inquiry highlighted that the enemy neutralized key regional assets, including intelligence gathering and firepower, which facilitated the breach into the outpost and the nearby Kibbutz Bari.

Details of the battle reveal that the initial alert was raised at 5:30 AM, but by 6:29 AM, Hamas launched a massive assault. Terrorists breached the perimeter through multiple entry points, with the first nine infiltrating the outpost at 6:55 AM. Subsequent waves of attackers split into squads, targeting various positions within the base. The initial volley of fire resulted in the deaths of three soldiers from the mortar squad.

Despite the overwhelming assault, soldiers, including Lieutenant Dekel Suissa, who acted as the de facto outpost commander, rallied defenders in the protected dining hall. They engaged terrorists attempting to breach the facility, with Suissa and another soldier falling during a counter-attack at the gate. Other soldiers also made valiant efforts, including a group of five who charged out of the dining hall to confront attackers, all of whom were killed.

The inquiry also detailed the actions of a tank crew led by Sergeant Major Shai Levinson, who engaged and eliminated ten terrorists before their tank was hit by an anti-tank missile, killing Levinson and severely wounding two others. The tank driver, Ido Somech, continued to operate the damaged tank, protecting civilians and soldiers near the Nova music festival site before eventually escaping. Rescue forces only reached the outpost at 4:20 PM, hours after the initial breach.
