Democrats Party Threatens High Court Action Over Yair Golan Security

The Israeli political party "The Democrats" has issued an ultimatum to the head of the Shin Bet security agency, David Zini, threatening to petition the High Court of Justice if he does not order security protection for party chairman, retired Major General Yair Golan, within four days. The party has set September 27 as the deadline for action.

The demand for security arises from the police's recent classification of Golan's threat level as 4 out of 6, the same level assigned to former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot. The Democrats' legal counsel, Omri Segev, detailed documented threats against Golan and his family in a letter to Zini, including calls for assassination and lynching, and the use of firearms. The letter also noted that Golan's name was the only one among party leaders to appear in a threatening letter attached to a brick thrown at Channel 12 studios.

The party emphasized that the Shin Bet is legally mandated to protect democratic institutions and that the Ministerial Committee for Shin Bet Affairs has transferred the responsibility for securing Knesset candidates to the Shin Bet chief. The Democrats warned that ignoring the severity of the threats and intelligence information could lead to harm to Golan's life, potentially in the near future.

They urged Zini to disregard political considerations and make a state-level decision appropriate to the circumstances, stating that inaction could result in a political assassination.
