Democrats Threaten High Court Over Security for Yair Golan

The "Democrats" party has sent an urgent warning letter to Shin Bet head David Barnea, demanding he immediately assign security detail to party chairman Yair Golan. The party stated that if a decision to secure Golan is not made by next Sunday, they will petition the High Court of Justice. The demand for security stems from an increase in Golan's threat level to 4 out of 6 by the Israel Police, the same level assigned to "National Unity" party chairman Gadi Eisenkot. The letter, sent by the party's legal counsel, details explicit and documented threats against Golan and his family, including calls for assassination and hanging. Golan's name was also reportedly the only party leader to appear in a threat letter attached to a brick thrown at Channel 12 studios. The Democrats emphasized to Barnea that the Shin Bet is legally responsible for safeguarding democratic institutions. The party's legal counsel wrote that ignoring the severity of the threats and intelligence information could lead to harm to Golan's life, potentially in the near future. He urged Barnea to disregard political noise and make a state-appropriate decision. The Public Advisory Committee for Personal Security had previously approved security for Eisenkot by a majority vote, against Barnea's position, but had not ruled on Golan's case. Reports indicate that despite the committee's decision on Eisenkot, the implementation is being deliberately delayed by certain individuals, with the committee chairman, Ronen Cohen, allegedly intentionally hindering the recommendation's progress.
