The IDF said it struck central Gaza on Saturday and killed Ahmad Samir Mohammad Weshah, a Hamas military wing operative who served as a sniper and, at the same time, as an Al Jazeera cameraman in recent years. Two other Hamas militants were killed in the same strike.
According to the army, Weshah had recently advanced sniper plans and other attacks against IDF troops operating in the Gaza Strip. The IDF said he was active in Hamas's military wing and posed a direct threat to forces in the area.
Weshah worked alongside his brother, Mohammad Samir Mohammad Weshah, a senior Hamas figure in the group's rocket and weapons production headquarters. The brother had operated under the cover of an Al Jazeera journalist and was killed in April.
The IDF said Weshah was eliminated in a precise airstrike because of his recent military activity and the threat he posed. Southern Command forces remain deployed in the area in line with the agreement and will continue acting to remove any immediate threat.
