New footage from the Gaza Strip is challenging the portrayal of Ahmed Washah, who was presented by Al Jazeera and Palestinian sources as a civilian cameraman killed in an Israeli strike. A frame from a video shows Washah carrying an assault rifle and walking in the street, directly contradicting the image of an unarmed journalist.
His killing drew strong international reactions. Among them, New York Mayor Mamdani sharply criticized Israel for killing the “journalist,” while Palestinians also tried to preserve that narrative by publishing official condolence notices describing Washah as a media worker.
The new material suggests that, beyond the camera lens, Washah was an armed operative and a Hamas sniper who was killed in the fighting. The report says the footage exposes a striking gap between his public presentation as a journalist and the reality shown on the ground.
The disclosure casts serious doubt on reporting coming out of Gaza and raises questions about the use of journalistic cover for terror activity on behalf of Hamas.
