The IDF said on Saturday that it killed Ahmed Samir Mohammed Wasa in a strike in central Gaza, along with two other Hamas militants. Wasa, it said, was a member of Hamas’s military wing and also worked for years as an Al Jazeera cameraman.
According to the military, Wasa was active as a sniper operative and had recently advanced sniper plans and other attacks against IDF forces operating in the Gaza Strip. The IDF said he was eliminated in a precise airstrike because of his recent military activity and the threat he posed to its troops in the area.
The statement also said Wasa worked alongside his brother, Mohammed Samir Mohammed Wasa, whom the IDF described as a senior operative in Hamas’s rocket and weapons production headquarters. The brother, the IDF said, operated under the cover of an Al Jazeera journalist and was killed in April.
The military framed the killing as part of its wider campaign against Hamas operatives in Gaza and emphasized that Wasa had been carrying out military activity while employed by the broadcaster.
