Israeli Sailors Dominate World Championships, Securing Gold and Silver
Israel has once again proven its prowess in sailing, with Tamar Steinberg clinching the world championship title in the iQFOiL class in England. Sharon Kantor secured the silver medal, finishing second.
In a remarkable display of Israeli dominance, three out of the four finalists in the women's competition were Israeli. Daniela Peleg narrowly missed out on a bronze medal, finishing in fourth place after a dramatic climb through the rankings. Peleg started the competition in 32nd place but made a significant comeback, entering the top ten on the final day of the qualifiers.
Steinberg, the 20-year-old reigning European champion and previous world runner-up, led the competition from the outset, winning seven out of sixteen races. She entered the final with a bonus point and delivered an impressive performance to secure the gold. Kantor, the 2024 world champion and Olympic silver medalist, also had a strong showing, steadily climbing the ranks to secure the silver medal.
In the men's division, Tom Reuveny narrowly missed a spot in the final. After a strong performance in the qualifiers and winning his quarterfinal and semifinal races, he was disqualified due to a re-start penalty, finishing third in the second attempt and failing to advance. Yoav Omer, who had led the competition at one point, also exited the event in the quarterfinals.
The championship in England was the largest and most significant world championship ever held at the venue, featuring approximately 250 participants from over 40 countries.
