A political storm is brewing over the permanent appointment of a director for the Israel Land Authority (ILA), with current acting director Yehuda Eliyahu facing scrutiny. Eliyahu, a confidant of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, was summoned for a hearing, which Likud party sources indicated was not intended as a precursor to dismissal but rather to "align” him. However, this explanation has caused confusion, as Eliyahu's camp has pushed back, stating he is not a pawn and will not cooperate with attempts to remove him or politicize the ILA.

The ILA has been without a permanent director for much of the year, with interim appointments causing delays in land marketing, potentially impacting housing prices. The selection committee, which previously included representatives from the Finance Ministry, was reconstituted with Smotrich's appointees, including a representative for him, to review candidates, including Eliyahu.

Sources suggest that while Eliyahu was initially favored, the committee's decision-making process has become entangled in internal politics and potential shifts in government coalitions.
