Housing Minister Summons Israel Land Authority Deputy to Hearing Before Dismissal

Housing Minister Yitzhak Goldknopf has summoned Yehuda Eliyahu, the acting director of the Israel Land Authority (ILA), for a pre-dismissal hearing, just months after appointing him. The move follows reports of a severe power struggle between the two concerning the boundaries of authority and influence within the ILA.

Eliyahu was appointed acting director in July by Goldknopf for a three-month period, after his permanent appointment was canceled by the High Court of Justice. The initial goal of Eliyahu's appointment was reportedly to replicate a successful development initiative in the Negev and Galilee regions, similar to one he led in the West Bank, with a focus on increasing Jewish presence in these areas. However, this initiative apparently faced internal opposition.

Sources within the ILA suggest that the tension stems from Goldknopf's desire for deeper involvement in the authority's operations, particularly through Sigal Gabai, the head of the business division. Gabai, who previously served in a similar role in the Ministry of Tourism under Goldknopf, is considered a powerful figure within the ILA, with her division responsible for a significant portion of land marketing and deals.

Eliyahu, since taking office, has sought to limit external interference and maintain professional decision-making control. This dispute over authority and influence has intensified in recent weeks, becoming a central point of friction between Eliyahu and the minister who appointed him. The deterioration in their relationship has cast doubt on the possibility of extending Eliyahu's temporary tenure beyond its October expiration.
