Iran Strikes US Base in Jordan After Oil Tankers Destroyed
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced it attacked a US base in Jordan overnight, following the US destruction of five Iranian oil tankers. The US action was reportedly a response to Iran firing ballistic missiles at a US Navy warship. During the Iranian strike, interceptions were also observed in Israeli airspace. Iran also reported explosions near Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Jordanian army stated that 20 missiles were launched from Iran toward its territory. Eighteen of these were intercepted, and two fell in unpopulated areas. Jordan reported no casualties from the incident.
The Iranian attack came after the US military's Central Command confirmed it destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers on September 8. Washington stated this operation was in retaliation for Iran launching ballistic missiles at a US Navy warship twice in the preceding two days. The US warship successfully evaded the Iranian attacks.
Iran presented the strike on the Jordanian base as retaliation for the tanker destruction. The IRGC also claimed to have attacked two US vessels and eight oil tankers in the Persian Gulf as part of its response to the US operation.
US Senator Marco Rubio commented on the escalating tensions in the Gulf, warning Tehran that for every attempt to strike US naval ships, Iran would lose oil tankers. He suggested this pattern would continue.
