Israel's Banking System Embraces Digital Check Deposits

Ice
Translated & summarized from Ice by baba
The story · English

The Bank of Israel has launched a new digital service allowing customers to deposit post-dated checks directly through their mobile banking apps. This innovation eliminates the need to wait for the check's due date or visit a physical branch for deposit. The service began a gradual rollout on September 2, 2026, with full public availability expected by October.

Initially, the service supports single-payee and crossed checks up to NIS 100,000, with payment dates up to 13 months in the future. Customers can photograph and deposit these checks via the app 24/7. The banking system will store the check data digitally and process the transaction automatically on the date specified on the check. Unlike traditional branch deposits, the original physical check remains with the customer after a digital deposit.

To prevent duplicate deposits, magnetic stripe data and due dates are securely synchronized across different banks. This digital check deposit feature is being integrated into most Israeli financial institutions, including major banks like Hapoalim, Leumi, Discount, Mizrahi Tefahot, International, Mercantile, Yahav, One Zero, and Post Finance.
