Israel Launches Smartphone Deposits for Post-Dated Checks

The story · English

The Bank of Israel has introduced a new service allowing individuals to deposit post-dated checks directly through their banking apps, even months before their due date. This feature began rolling out on September 2nd and is expected to be fully operational across various banks by October. Previously, recipients of post-dated checks had to store them and remember to deposit them on the specified date. Now, users can photograph and deposit checks immediately upon receipt, with the system automatically processing them on the scheduled date.

Initially, the service supports check deposits up to NIS 100,000, with due dates extending up to 13 months into the future. The feature is designed for checks marked 'for the beneficiary only' and will be accessible 24/7. Unlike traditional branch deposits, the physical check remains with the customer after an app deposit. To prevent duplicate deposits, check details and due dates are shared across banks via a central system.

Participating banks include Bank Hapoalim, Leumi, Discount, Mercantile, Mizrahi Tefahot, International Group, Yahav, ONE ZERO, and Post Financial Services. Despite the rise of digital payments, checks remain a significant part of Israel's financial activity, with approximately NIS 640 billion transacted via checks in 2025, according to Bank of Israel data. The central bank anticipates this new capability will save customers time, reduce branch visits, and particularly benefit small businesses and households that frequently use post-dated checks.
