Israeli Banks to Allow Mobile Deposit of Post-Dated Checks

Calcalist
Translated & summarized from Calcalist by baba
The story · English

Bank of Israel announced that starting September 2, 2026, customers will be able to deposit post-dated checks through their banks' mobile applications. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on physical bank branches and streamline payment systems. The rollout will be gradual over the coming weeks, with full implementation expected by October.

Previously, bank apps only supported immediate-dated checks, requiring customers to deposit future-dated checks in person. The new service will be available at most major Israeli banks, including Hapoalim, Leumi, Discount, Mizrahi Tefahot, and others. Initially, digital deposits will be capped at NIS 100,000 per check and for checks with a maturity date up to 13 months from the deposit date. The service will also be limited to crossed checks marked "for account payee only."

A key change involves the physical check. Unlike traditional deposits where the bank holds the physical check, in the digital system, the customer retains the check. The bank stores a scan, and the check details are automatically presented for payment on the due date. Magnetic stripe information and the due date will be shared between banks for clearing and to prevent duplicate deposits.

This move is expected to lower operational costs for banks, potentially leading to reduced fees for customers compared to in-person deposits. Despite the growing use of cash and credit cards, checks remain a significant payment method in Israel. In 2025, check activity amounted to approximately NIS 640 billion, representing about 5% of the total volume across major payment methods.
