Israel Allows Mobile Deposits for Post-Dated Checks
The Bank of Israel has announced that customers can now deposit post-dated checks through their banking applications, a service previously limited to checks with immediate payment dates. This new feature allows users to deposit checks upon receipt, even if the payment date is weeks or months in the future. The check image is stored digitally, and the system automatically presents it for payment on the scheduled date.
Initially, the service supports checks up to NIS 100,000 with payment dates up to 13 months in advance. It is available for "crossed" checks, marked "for payee only," and operates 24/7. Unlike branch deposits, the physical check remains with the customer after the digital deposit. Magnetic stripe data and payment dates are shared between banks to prevent duplicate deposits.
This digital deposit option is being rolled out gradually across several major Israeli banks, including Bank Hapoalim, Bank Leumi, and Discount Bank, with full operation expected by October. The Bank of Israel estimates that this convenience will save customers time and reduce branch visits, while also offering operational savings for the banks.
Despite the widespread adoption of digital payments, checks remain a significant financial instrument in Israel. In 2025, the total value of check transactions is projected to reach approximately NIS 640 billion, representing about 5% of the total payment activity in the economy. Officials highlighted that this digital advancement addresses the needs of households and small businesses that rely on post-dated checks, streamlining a process that previously required separate handling.
