Brain-Eating Amoeba Prompts Postponement of Sea of Galilee Swim

The annual Sea of Galilee swimming challenge, scheduled for Thursday, has been postponed due to concerns over the presence of a brain-eating amoeba. The decision was made by the event organizers after the Ministry of Health issued a warning about the amoeba, known as Naegleria fowleri, which can cause a rare and severe brain infection.

The amoeba is typically found in warm freshwater environments. While infections are extremely rare, they are almost always fatal. Health officials are advising the public to avoid swimming in or near the Sea of Galilee until further notice, and to refrain from submerging their heads in the water.

Organizers are working to reschedule the event for a later date and will provide updates to participants. The postponement highlights the potential public health risks associated with recreational water activities during warmer months.
