Health Ministry Tightens Sea of Galilee Swimming Advisories After New Amoeba Case

Israel's Ministry of Health has issued updated guidelines for swimming in the Sea of Galilee following the confirmation of another case of infection with the Naegleria fowleri amoeba. The ministry is now advising swimmers to exercise extreme caution and minimize activities that involve submerging the head underwater.

Specifically, the updated recommendations urge people to avoid diving, jumping into the water, and any situations where water might enter the nasal passages. As an additional precaution, individuals who choose to enter the water are advised to use appropriate nose plugs.

This latest advisory comes after the fourth case of Naegleria fowleri infection diagnosed in Israel since 2022 was confirmed. The ministry emphasized that the recommendations are not intended to prevent people from entering the water altogether, but rather to reduce actions where the head and nose are submerged.
