Health Ministry Advises Against Water Entering Nose in Sea of Galilee Amid Amoeba Risk

Israel's Ministry of Health has updated its public recommendations following cases of infection with the Naegleria fowleri amoeba. The ministry emphasized that while the disease is very rare, it is severe and life-threatening. Infection occurs when water containing the amoeba enters the nose, from which it can travel to the brain. The ministry clarified that contracting the disease through drinking water is impossible, and it is not transmitted from person to person.

To mitigate the risk, particularly during bathing in the Sea of Galilee, the public is advised to minimize water entering the nose. This includes using appropriate nose plugs, avoiding diving, jumping into the water, and submerging the head as much as possible. Additionally, activities that cause water to enter the nose under pressure should be avoided.
