Boy Critically Ill With Suspected Brain-Eating Amoeba After Swimming in Sea of Galilee
A 9-year-old boy is in critical condition, sedated and on a respirator, at Rambam Hospital after contracting a rare amoebic infection that causes brain inflammation. Health Ministry officials are investigating the case, with preliminary findings suggesting the boy may have been exposed to the amoeba while swimming at Kinneret Beach in the Sea of Galilee about a week before his hospitalization.
The infection, caused by a brain-eating amoeba, is extremely rare and has a high mortality rate. Israel has reported three previous cases of this disease in recent years.
