James Tavernier Joins Maccabi Tel Aviv, Rekindling Partnership with Coach Kenny Miller

Veteran defender James Tavernier is set to sign with Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv, reportedly choosing them over offers from Newcastle, Aston Villa, Nice, and Italian clubs. Despite Maccabi Tel Aviv not competing in European tournaments this season and the ongoing security situation in Israel, Tavernier's decision is largely attributed to his strong past relationship with Maccabi Tel Aviv's coach, Kenny Miller.

Tavernier and Miller played together at Rangers from 2015 to 2018, forming a formidable attacking partnership. During their 107 games together, they were involved in 16 goals, with Tavernier assisting Miller 13 times. This collaboration was instrumental in Rangers' resurgence in Scottish football. Tavernier, initially a lower-league player, developed into a key attacking fullback, while Miller, in his second stint at Rangers, was the experienced forward.

Tavernier has spoken highly of Miller, calling him an "inspiration" and a "model professional." Miller, in turn, has praised Tavernier's character, leadership, and ability to perform under pressure, even calling him a "special player" who can lift the team. Miller's own career, marked by hard work and unifying players, led him to coaching, including his current role at Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Miller's advocacy for Tavernier, even after his retirement from playing, and his vision for Tavernier potentially joining him in coaching roles post-retirement, may have influenced Tavernier's move. Tavernier, now 34, has also been involved in coaching youth teams, suggesting a future in coaching. His move to Maccabi Tel Aviv is seen as a significant addition, bringing leadership and a clear direction to the club, aiming to restore it to its former glory.
