Maccabi Tel Aviv Signs Rangers Legend James Tavernier

Maccabi Tel Aviv announced on Monday the signing of English right-back James Tavernier on a one-year contract with an option for an additional season. The 34-year-old, considered a legend at Scottish club Rangers, joins as a free agent after leaving them last summer. Tavernier, who will wear number 2 for Maccabi Tel Aviv, successfully passed his medical examinations and signed the contract.

Tavernier expressed his honor in joining a club with such history and tradition. He stated his excitement about experiencing a new country and culture, a long-held career aspiration. He mentioned hearing positive remarks about the club's ambitions, desire for titles, and the passionate fan base from coach Kenny Miller, with whom he previously played at Rangers. Tavernier emphasized his understanding of the importance of fan support in driving a team forward and his commitment to helping Maccabi achieve its goals.

During his 11 seasons with Rangers, Tavernier became a symbol of the club, making 565 appearances across all competitions. He scored an impressive 144 goals and provided 148 assists, notably excelling at free kicks and penalties. Last season, he contributed 14 goals and 6 assists. Despite being linked with several prominent European clubs, including Newcastle, Lille, and West Ham, Tavernier ultimately chose to sign with the Israeli Cup holders.
