James Tavernier's Free Kick and Penalty Prowess Bolsters Maccabi Tel Aviv

Maccabi Tel Aviv has acquired James Tavernier, a defender renowned for his exceptional goal-scoring record from free kicks and penalties, drawing parallels to David Beckham's early career dedication. Tavernier spent 11 years with Rangers, accumulating 565 appearances and 144 goals, becoming the highest-scoring defender in British football history. A significant portion of his goals, 77 from penalties and 21 from direct free kicks, highlight his unique attacking threat.

His remarkable achievement of scoring 131 career goals, surpassing Graham Alexander's record in March 2024, was noted by then-Rangers manager Philippe Clement as "quite exceptional." Tavernier achieved this feat in just over half the appearances Alexander needed, underscoring his efficiency.

Tavernier's prowess from the penalty spot was a consistent feature for Rangers, though he did miss some crucial penalties, notably against Celtic in the Scottish Cup quarter-finals in March. His free-kick ability, however, was evident even before his time at Rangers. Steve Evans, his former manager at Rotherham, recalled that Tavernier "won us games with his set pieces," often scoring from free kicks within 27 meters of the goal.

Inspired by David Beckham, Tavernier practiced tirelessly in his backyard as a child, aiming at a washing line pole to hone his technique. While free kicks were an early focus, penalties became a more significant part of his game later on. His transition to becoming a primary penalty taker at Rangers was almost accidental, starting with a successful free kick on his debut after taking initiative in a pre-game training session.

Further demonstrating his attacking capabilities, Tavernier finished as the top scorer in the 2021/22 Europa League with seven goals, all scored in knockout stages, a feat unprecedented for a right-back. He outscored prominent strikers like Ciro Immobile and Victor Osimhen, earning recognition from UEFA as the first-ever defender to achieve this. His career total of 144 goals and 148 assists in 565 games for Rangers signifies a remarkable 292 direct goal involvements from a right-back, making him a significant offensive asset for Maccabi Tel Aviv even at age 34.
